AI patent search: smart insect bite healing devices 🦟📱

AI is bringing new ways to quickly grasp the patent landscape around an existing concept or a new idea…

This summer as I was bitten by many mosquitoes in south of France, a neighbour gave a small USB-C device to relieve the pain and itching from bites. The device, called “heat it” actually worked very well and avoided me some itchy evenings and nights.

As I found this product highly innovative, I performed an AI patent search describing the product’s characteristics to identify the 100 most relevant patents.  As best AI match, I got the patent covering the actual product I had in my hands (“heat it” pro from Kamedi GmbH, Germany). Impressive! And what’s even better is that I could quickly spot its closest neighbours, patents from Infrasolid GmbH (Germany) and Dermapharm AG (Switzerland).

Indeed, this use case is not particularly remarkable in itself (a boolean search with assignee = Kamedi GmbH could have been performed as well), but it demonstrates that AI is opening completely new ways to navigate the wide and complex field of patents (>150 million patents accessible). This is made possible by performing AI patent searches based on a combination of characteristics rather than just combination of words as it is done with the boolean approach.

It means that beyond traditional novelty and FTO searches, it is now possible and essential to conduct rapid and continuous patent monitoring to identify highly relevant patents early in the innovation process. The main advantages include the following:

  • Avoid wasting resources by reinventing the wheel

  • Stay ahead in the fast-moving innovation landscape by identifying emerging trends

  • Get inspired by existing innovations and best practices
